As local astronomers debate over how much telescope time to request
 
Chile is now competing with Spain for the right to host one of the most important astronomy projects the world has known: the extremely large E-ELT telescope.

The mammoth telescope will provide detailed studies of planets around other stars, the first objects in the universe, black holes, the nature and distribution of the dark matter and dark energy in the Universe and tracking down earth-like planets around other stars where life could exist.

Expatriate marine species migrate en masse to Chile's relatively cooler shores thanks to El Nino

“I felt a rush and a little fear when I saw it,” said Chilean surf champion Diego Medina after spotting what appeared to be a shark off the beaches of La Serena (Region IV). In reality, the creature was one of the large swordfish species that recently migrated to Chile's shores as a consequence of warming water currents.

Valparaiso’s Cultural Carnival kicks Off This Friday As Chile Celebrates Its Independence

Valparaíso celebrates its annual Cultural Carnival this week with a flurry of events including art exhibitions, music and theatre performances, literature readings in the city's cafés, cinema screenings and gastronomic fairs.

The festival is themed ‘200 years of Chile’ as the country celebrates two centuries of independence this year. Other Latin American countries are also celebrating 200 years of independence - including Argentina, Colombia and Mexico.

Suspect Detained For Vina Del Mar Fire

Same man responsible for fire at the Metropolitan Cathedral in 2008 is arrested

A man was arrested on Tuesday near the scene of a fire that struck the northern part of Vina del Mar last Monday. Patricio Castro Parado was found by police with matches and a cardboard tube in his possession.

Monday’s fire broke out at about 4 p.m. and consumed almost five acres before being calmed by various fire departments.

Chilean Police Officer Faces Trial Over Photographer Assault

A Chilean policeman (Carabinero) will stand trial over the May, 2008 assault of photojournalist Victor Salas, a military court in Valparaiso announced on Monday.

Salas' case is the third incident of Police violence at protests to hit the headlines
in recent months.
